I was checking out some Star Wars stuff last night and read a forum that discussed nothing but "Should Darth Maul have died (in The Phantom Menace [TPM])?"
Darth Maul kicked a lot of ass on TPM. So why did he die the way he did? So... it's been a toss-up, apparently, where some say he should have lived, others say he should have died. Here's my two cents as posted to the forum:
Should Darth Maul been killed off?
Considering it's been over a year and it's still being asked and given personal opinion, it's kinda a major what-if. We've seen trade paperbacks, and what not where in one, we had the ultimate showdown between Vader and Maul... but it was more of a vision and test...
But what if Maul didn't die in TPM and stayed for even at least AOTC?
What possible scenarios?
There's been "Well, there's rule of One Master, One Apprentice, no more, no less".
Can't have Maul, Dooku, AND Sidious all together... but then again...
The reason for the rule was Darth Bane trying to get the other Sith Lords to bow down before one Dark Lord of the Sith so that 'he' could focus their energy against the common Jedi enemy. This wasn't always the rule because there used to be many Sith Lords. I know this goes beyond the 6 episodes, but still.
Was it a rule? Mace and Yoda said so. But they also didn't know that Sidious was in their midst all that time on Coruscant. Maybe Sidious felt he was more powerful than Darth Bane, especially since he killed off his previous master. So possibly having brains (Dooku) and brawn (Maul) together would have worked, and Sidious could have worked them like puppets...in the same movie.
Or just have Maul as the sole Sith apprentice under Sidious. Anakin was discovered by Qui-Gon. If Maul survived TPM, and yet Obi-Wan still becomes Anakin's Master, he would have told Anakin that Maul killed Qui-Gon. Later, after all attempts to kill Amidala had failed, via bounty hounters, etc... Send in Maul. Maul tries to once again kill Amidala, and this time, does not succeed snce Anakin is there to protect her, but Maul comes close. Anakin then remembers how Maul killed Qui-Gon, and now with the attempt on Amidala, has this ultimate desire to kill Maul. Sidious uses this to his advantage, and seeing that Anakin is now 'ready', has Maul -and- Anakin face off in his chambers. Maul thinks it's just to finish off the Jedi apprentice. Anakin thinks it's to attack Maul before he can kill Palpatine. Palpatine tells them during the fight for Anakin to finish Maul before he can attempt to kill Amidala again...(although no one else knew of Maul's attempt on Amidala, according to Anakin and Amidala, because another attempt on Amidala would result in her going farther away from Anakin, which he did not want, so they kept the attack secret... which makes one wonder how Palpatine KNEW of this...) This distracts Maul, making him utter some of his only lines in this episode... questioning why Palp is saying this and admits that it was Palp's idea to kill off Amidala. Anakin wants Maul dead, thinkin only of Amidala. Maul now wants to kill Palp for his betrayal. Maul knocks Anakin away in one chamber, then goes towards Palp, but Anakin regains himself, and kills Maul from the back before Maul even touches Palp...and Palp was unmoved throughout this sequence, knowing full well Maul would not survive. Now since Anakin used his emotions to kill Maul, he succumbs to the Dark Side even more, and Sidious uses this to convert Anakin to the Dark Side. Mace Windu and others enter the chamber, see that Anakin is oining the Dark Side, and so they must destroy him AND Palp. Anakin that attacks them, finishes them off, and makes Sidious proud. Continue Executive Order 66.
Another scenario:
Maul dies in TPM. Anakin and Obi-1 patrol Coruscant. They turn to a blind alley after investigating a disturbance. Obi-1 says "I sense something...a presence I've not felt since..." And as he says this, in near total darkness except for the glow of both his and Anakin's lightsource... a red lightsaber extends in the darkness. Anakin and Obi-1 wield their lightsaber, both side by side, facing forward towards this glowing red lightsaber...but the wielder is hidden. and then, just as they prepare for the attack, the red lightsaber becomes a dual-bladed lightsaber. Anakin and Obi-1 look at each other, give each other the same "i know what you're thinking look"...and through the glow of ightsabers, Darth Maul's silouhette becomes more evident...until the red glow of his lightsaber shows his unique tattoos.
And just when the two Jedi prepare against this single foe...the hear and feel the presence of yet another lightsaber hum to life. they glance back and see a red lightsaber...and slowly it too lets loose the second half of a red dual-bladed lightsaber. Yes. two Darth Mauls. but this is no ordinary two-way alley. it is in fact, a three-way alley. and yes, a third dual-lightsaber makes itself known, wielded by yet a third Darth Maul. The two Jedi show their expression of "OH @#$%", but Obi-1 instructs Anakin to concentrate. Just then, as the three Darth Mauls circle the two Jedi, Mace Windu, Ki-Adi Mundi, and a few more Jedi help Obi-1 and Anakin fight off the Darth Mauls, killing two, while the third flees...
Enter: Attack of the Clones.
